Sleep is arguably the single most powerful recovery tool available and it costs nothing. During deep sleep, your body releases growth hormone, repairs damaged muscle tissue, consolidates motor patterns learned during training, and resets the hormonal systems that regulate energy, hunger, and stress. Chronic sleep deprivation has been shown to reduce strength, impair reaction time, increase cortisol levels, and make it significantly harder to lose body fat even when training consistently and eating well. Most adults performing regular exercise need seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night to support optimal performance and recovery. If you are doing everything right in the gym but neglecting your sleep, you are leaving a significant amount of your results on the table.
